UP YOUR DOG SHOW GAME

Helping Breeders &

Exhibitors Succeed in the  Show Ring

GREAT QUESTION

‍To tell the truth, what bothers me a lot is when people congregate with their dogs near the ring opening during the day’s breed judging. I think this is dangerous, and I always try to break it up. Dogs coming into the ring or exiting the ring can easily bump into each other, and nothing good can come from this. I also think many people do not pay enough attention to their dogs when walking through crowded aisles, allowing them to roam at the end of their leads. I always would hold my dog very close – often with my hand on my dog’s muzzle – and I KNEW my dogs were not aggressive – but I didn’t always trust the other dogs. Remember, dogs are not machines, and they could have bad days also.

‍Another problem I see is those exhibitors who allow their dogs to bark and lunge at every dog that passes by – whether they are in their crate or not. Many times, these are smaller or Toy breeds, and their owners must feel they are just being cute. But one of these times, a bigger dog is going to not think it is so cute and grab the other dog, and then there is a serious problem – and which dog and handler do you think will get into trouble?

‍Finally, there are those people who have their dogs in a crate near the rings, and allow it to bark incessantly – sometimes even while the owners are sitting right next to them. This is very annoying to the judge and other exhibitors, and can be disconcerting to young, nervous dogs in the ring. I have often stepped out of the ring to make the owners either move or make their dogs behave – sometimes under the threat of calling the AKC Rep or a Bench Committee.

‍C’mon folks. This is supposed to be enjoyable – for people and dogs. Be considerate and keep yourself, others, and the dogs safe. Pay attention and care about what you are doing.

‍Sorry – I will get off my soapbox now!
