UP YOUR DOG SHOW GAME

Helping Breeders &

Exhibitors Succeed in the  Show Ring

GREAT QUESTION

When I judge a breed that is usually shown by handlers kneeling with the dogs – or shown on a table – I usually tell the exhibitors to just stand when they first enter my ring. I do this because I am just going to walk down the line introducing myself to each dog, and looking for their expression. Maybe in the back of my mind I also do it because I know – at my age – how hard it is to get down and up again.

The simple answer to this question is that it is the exhibitor’s job to show her dog to its best advantage. If the dog is more comfortable and therefore shows better with the handler kneeling, then that is what should be done. If the dog free-baits and looks good doing it, then do that. This is another area where a friend – especially one with a camera – can be of help. As a matter of fact, part of my procedure in a large or competitive class is to call the dogs out one or two at a time and have them stand on their own so I can see that without the handler’s help or hindrance. Whether the exhibitor is standing or kneeling should not make a bit of difference to the judge, because the judge’s attention should be on the dog.

To take it a step further, many years ago, I was taught that a really good handler shouldn’t be noticed, and that the best handler was one who got the best out of his dog without making a show of himself. I believe that a flamboyant handler – or one that makes a show of himself – actually detracts from the dog. The best handler is one who moves slowly and smoothly, has soft hands on the dog, and stays out of the way of the judge.

So, basically, remember that it is the DOG that is being judged, and you should do whatever is necessary to have your dog look at its best.

I hope that helps.
